Vernon Bereaux

Vernon, the Big Fisherman started in in the field of calypso after being motivated by his brother. Using his knowledge, his appreciation of the art-form and his lyrical wit, he was able secure a name for himself in the Corporate World of “kaiso” singing.

Writing his own compositions has brought him much success at both the TSTT and AMCHAM competitions. His past achievements include a finalist placing in the national1998 humorous competition, the San Juan regionals and back to back wins in Carapichaima in 2012 and 2013. Specific to the TSTT competition, he was a three time winner in 2000, 2009 and 2013.

“Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to mid 20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 1600s.  The music, which drew upon African and French influences, became the voice of the people, and was characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, which was most often sung in French creole.”
